Website Update:

The National City Police Department Cadet Post (#2859) is a youth program for ages 14 to 20, created to inspire the next generation of law enforcement professionals. Through hands on training and community service, cadets gain a firsthand look at the responsibilities of a police officer while learning the values of integrity, respect, and service. More than just a program, it’s a path that has led many young men and women to discover their passion for public safety and begin meaningful careers in law enforcement.

The Police Cadet Program, part of the Explorer Scouts under the Boy Scouts of America, includes Post 2859, which is chartered through the organization and sponsored in part by the National City Police Department. In addition to scouting and social events, cadets may qualify for various college scholarship opportunities. Sworn police officers serve as advisors, providing supervision and support for all post activities.

The Position:

As Police Cadets, participants play a vital role in supporting officers, the department, and the community in a non-enforcement capacity. Duties include directing traffic, managing crowds at special events, and assisting with law enforcement presentations, all under the guidance of field officers. Beyond these responsibilities, cadets have the opportunity to engage in rewarding social activities such as field trips, camping, and scouting events throughout San Diego County and across the country—providing valuable experience and fostering leadership in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Cadet Eligibility and Requirements:
You may be eligible to become a Cadet if...
  • You are 14-20 years old

  • You are registered as a full-time student with a grade point average of 2.0 or above furnish their quarterly reports

  • You have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor

  • You can successfully pass a minimum background check and oral interview

  • After acceptance, applicants will be required to successfully complete a Cadet Academy during their first year. This can be either the Beta Academy or the week-long live-in academy.

  • Each Cadet is required to purchase their own uniform, although some items are available on a loan basis.

Application Procedure

All prospective members are required to attend a mandatory interest and new candidate information meeting, held twice a year (dates to be announced). Meetings take place at the National City Police Department, located at 1200 National City Blvd, National City, CA 91950. Attendance is mandatory to be considered for the program. Applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
