Reducing Fire Hazards Through Prevention

The National City Fire Department's Weed Abatement Program helps protect our community by reducing fire hazards created by dry vegetation, combustible debris, and other public nuisances. Keeping properties free of hazardous vegetation helps reduce the risk of fire spreading to nearby homes, businesses, fences, and other structures.

Did You Receive a Weed Abatement Notice?

If you recently received a Weed Abatement Notice, Fire Prevention Services, Inc., is the National City Fire Department's authorized contractor for weed abatement inspections and related administrative services..  Under contract, Fire Prevention Services, Inc. inspected your property and determined that vegetation or other combustible materials visible from the public right-of-way may require corrective action.

To protect private property, inspectors:

• Do not enter residences.
• Do not enter backyards.
• Do not climb or look over fences.
• Only document violations visible from the street.

What Should I Do?

If you receive a notice:

• Review the notice carefully.
• Remove the identified fire hazard before the compliance deadline.
• Properly dispose of weeds, brush, and other combustible debris.
• Contact Fire Prevention Services if you have questions or believe the notice was issued in error.

What Is Considered a Fire Hazard?

Examples may include:

• Dry or overgrown weeds
• Dead grass or vegetation
• Brush accumulation
• Combustible yard debris
• Other vegetation creating a fire hazard or public nuisance

All inspections are conducted in accordance with the National City Municipal Code Ordinance governing the abatement of public nuisances.
