Business Self Inspection Checklist

Make fire prevention a high priority for your business. Always be on the look-out for fire hazards and make sure you have the proper fire safety equipment.


  • Exit corridors and aisles remain unobstructed, free of any material or matter at all times
  • Exit doors are able to be opened from inside without a key, special knowledge, or effort
  • Main entry door, ONLY, may have deadbolt lock but is unlocked during business hours, without fail
  • Exit signs in place to clearly indicate exit path, minimum 6-inch letters with ¾-inch stroke
  • Exit signs are illuminated when building is occupied

Fire Extinguishers and Fire Extinguisher Systems

  • Fire extinguishers serviced annually by State Fire Marshal-licensed company as well as if discharged or if tampered with
  • Extinguishers have minimum rating of 2A:10B:C and are located at an exit or on an exit path every 75 feet of travel or as otherwise required by the Fire Department
  • Extinguishers mounted 3-1/2 to 5 feet above floor


  • No extension cords or multi-plug adapters in use
  • No electrical cords extending through walls, ceilings, floors, under doors, or floor covering
  • No damaged electrical cords, plugs, or outlets
  • 30-inch minimum clearance maintained around circuit panel

General Fire Safety

  • Combustible storage maintained at least 24 inches below ceiling (18 inches if sprinklered)
  • No combustibles stored in furnace or electrical rooms or below stairs
  • Clearance maintained between heat-producing equipment and combustibles
  • Storage maintained in neat and orderly manner to minimize fire spread and facilitate control
  • Dumpsters are a minimum of 5 feet from combustibles; covers kept closed
  • Compressed gas cylinders are properly secured and contents clearly labeled.

Fire-Resistive Barriers

  • Fire doors and fire dampers maintained to be fully operational
  • Fire-resistive walls and ceilings maintained without holes, breaks, or missing panels

Flammable Liquids

  • Fire Dept. restrictions regarding flammable liquids continually observed

Hazardous Materials

  • Fire Dept. has current Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement with quantity stored and quantity in regular use
