Providing Advanced Emergency Medical Care When Every Second Counts

Medical emergencies require rapid, professional care.  The National City Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program provides 24-hour emergency medical response to residents, businesses, and visitors throughout National City.  Our firefighter/paramedics and firefighter/emergency medical technicians (EMTs) deliver immediate lifesaving care while working closely with our ambulance transport partner to ensure patients receive the highest level of pre-hospital medical treatment.

Our EMS System

The National City Fire Department partners with American Medical Response (AMR) to provide comprehensive emergency medical services throughout the community.

Because fire engines are strategically located throughout the city, firefighters often arrive first at medical emergencies.  Our personnel immediately begin patient assessment and treatment while AMR ambulance crews respond to provide patient transport and continued medical care when needed.

Advanced Life Support

Since launching the Department's Paramedic Program in 2007, National City firefighters have provided Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities on frontline emergency apparatus whenever staffing permits.

Depending on the nature of the emergency, firefighter/paramedics may provide:

• Advanced patient assessment
• Cardiac monitoring
• Airway management
• Medication administration
• Trauma care
• CPR and defibrillation
• Other advanced lifesaving interventions

This early medical care helps improve patient outcomes by delivering treatment as quickly as possible.

Available 24 Hours a Day

Emergency Medical Services personnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to respond to medical emergencies throughout National City.

Whether responding to a cardiac emergency, stroke, traumatic injury, motor vehicle collision, or other medical emergency, our firefighters are committed to providing compassionate, professional, and high-quality patient care.
