Working smoke alarms provide the early warning needed to escape safely during a fire. The National City Fire Department is committed to helping reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities by providing free smoke alarms and installation for qualifying homeowners.

If your home does not have enough smoke alarms, or your existing smoke alarms are missing, damaged, or no longer functioning properly, we may be able to help.

Who Qualifies?

You may qualify for free smoke alarm installation if you:

• Live in National City or Lincoln Acres
• Own and occupy your home as your primary residence

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips

For the best protection:

• Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom.
• Install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area.
• Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.
• Test all smoke alarms at least once a month.
• Replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer or whenever a smoke alarm chirps.
• Replace smoke alarms approximately every 10 years or according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
