Natural gas is a safe and reliable source of energy, but if a gas line is damaged during an earthquake or other emergency, it can create a serious fire or explosion hazard.

The National City Fire Department provides free gas shutoff wrenches, while supplies last, to help residents prepare for emergencies.

A gas shutoff wrench is one small tool that can make a big difference when used safely and appropriately.

When Should You Shut Off Your Gas?

Only shut off your natural gas if you:

• Smell natural gas.
• Hear a hissing sound near a gas line or meter.
• See a damaged or broken gas line.
• Believe your home has sustained damage that may have caused a gas leak.

If you suspect a gas leak:

1. Leave the area immediately.
2. Move to a safe location.
3. Call 9-1-1 and San Diego Gas & Electric.
4. Do not use matches, lighters, electrical switches, or anything that could create a spark.

Do not turn off your gas simply because an earthquake occurred.  If there is no suspected leak, leave your gas service on.

If your gas is shut off at the meter, do not turn it back on yourself.  San Diego Gas & Electric must safely restore your service.

Before an emergency:

• Locate your natural gas meter.
• Identify the shutoff valve.
• Learn how the valve operates.
• Store your gas shutoff wrench in a safe, accessible location with your emergency supplies.

Preparing ahead of time allows you to act quickly if an emergency occurs.
