Gain Valuable Seconds Before Strong Shaking Begins

Earthquakes can occur at any time without warning. California's Earthquake Early Warning System is designed to provide valuable seconds of advance notice before strong shaking reaches your location, giving you time to protect yourself and those around you.

Those few seconds may allow you to:

• Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
• Move away from windows or heavy objects.
• Pause hazardous activities.
• Prepare for the arrival of strong shaking.

How Earthquake Early Warning Works

Earthquake early warning systems detect an earthquake after it begins but before the strongest shaking reaches areas farther from the epicenter.  Using a statewide network of seismic sensors, the system rapidly estimates the earthquake's location and expected shaking intensity, then sends alerts to people who may be affected.

Because earthquakes travel at incredible speeds, warning times vary.  People close to the epicenter may receive little or no advance warning, while others farther away may receive several seconds to prepare.

Ways to Receive Earthquake Warnings

MyShake App

The free MyShake app provides audio and visual earthquake warnings for compatible, which is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play store, along with additional earthquake information.

Android Earthquake Alerts

Many Android phones include Earthquake Alerts as a built-in feature. Ensure your phone's location services and emergency alert settings are enabled so you can receive notifications.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)

Wireless Emergency Alerts are automatically sent to compatible mobile phones during significant emergencies, including some earthquakes.  No registration is required.

When You Receive an Alert

If you receive an earthquake warning or feel shaking:

• Drop to your hands and knees.
• Cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk if available.
• Hold On until the shaking stops.

If you are outdoors, move away from buildings, utility lines, and other hazards.  If you are driving, safely pull over when conditions permit.
