Access Public Records

The National City Fire Department is committed to transparency and providing public access to government records in accordance with the California Public Records Act (CPRA).  Members of the public may request copies of public records maintained by the Fire Department, subject to applicable state laws governing disclosure and confidentiality.

Our staff will make every effort to process requests promptly and assist you in identifying the records you are seeking.

What Records Can I Request?

The Fire Department maintains a variety of public records, including, but not limited to:

  • Fire incident reports (when releasable)
  • Fire inspection records
  • Fire prevention permits
  • Public education materials
  • Department policies and procedures
  • Administrative records
  • Other records maintained by the Fire Department that are subject to public disclosure

Please note that certain records may be exempt from disclosure under California law, including records containing confidential, medical, investigative, or personally identifiable information.

How to Submit a Public Records Request

To help us process your request efficiently, please provide as much detail as possible, including:

  • A description of the record(s) requested
  • Incident address (if applicable)
  • Incident date or approximate date
  • Report number (if known)
  • Any additional information that may assist staff in locating the records

Response Time

The City will respond to requests in accordance with the California Public Records Act.  In most cases, the City will determine within 10 calendar days whether responsive records exist and whether they are subject to disclosure.  Additional time may be required for complex requests or when permitted by law.

Fees

There is generally no fee to submit a Public Records Request.  However, fees may apply for paper copies, oversized documents, electronic media, or other direct costs of duplication as permitted by law.

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, the fees for copies are:

  • $1.00 for the first page
  • $0.15 for each additional page

Applicable fees will be communicated during the request process.

After You Submit Your Request

Once your request has been submitted through NextRequest, you will be able to:

  • Receive confirmation that your request has been received.
  • Track the status of your request online.
  • Communicate with City staff if additional information is needed.
  • Receive notification when your request has been completed or if additional review is required.
