🗳️ Elections and Running for Local Office

The City of National City is a General Law City governed by a five-member City Council:

• The Mayor is elected at-large to a four-year term.

• Four City Councilmembers are elected by district (Districts 1–4).

District boundaries are redrawn every 10 years following the U.S. Census.

📅 Municipal Election Schedule

• Municipal elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in even-numbered years.

🏛️ Mayoral Responsibilities

In addition to presiding over the City Council, the Mayor also serves as the presiding officer for:

• National City Community Development Commission

• Housing Authority

• Joint Powers Financing Authority

• Successor Agency to the former National City Redevelopment Agency

🗂️ Role of the City Clerk in Elections

The City Clerk serves as the elections official and is responsible for:

• Issuing and accepting nomination papers

• Managing local measures

• Publishing legally required election notices

• Maintaining all campaign finance and conflict of interest filings as required by the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC)
