Q Nomination Papers – Who may sign?
A Any person residing within the City of National City and registered to vote in National City may sign a Candidate’s Nomination Papers, including the Candidate may sign their own Nomination Papers. Elections Code 10220.
**If Candidate is running for a seat representing a District, the person signing the nomination papers must also live and be a registered voter within that same District.
Q Do I have to live in the District to Sign Nomination Papers for a Candidate?
A Yes, unless it is for the Candidate for Mayor who represents the City at-large.
Q Can I sign more than one set of Nomination Papers?
A No. If you do, the first Candidate to be qualified will use your signature and any others will be invalid.
Q Can someone else pick up my nomination papers?
A Yes, with a signed authorization. However, you will be required to be in person to submit your Nomination Papers.
Q Are the Mayoral and City Council positions partisan or non-partisan?
A City elected positions are non-partisan, meaning candidates do not have to declare a political party in order to run for office. Elections Code 334
Q Nomination Papers – How many signatures are required?
A A minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30. Elections Code 10220.
Q Do I have to wait until the nomination filing deadline to turn in my nomination petition and other forms?
A No, you may turn in the forms as soon as they are complete during the nomination period. Candidates are encouraged to make an appointment with the City Clerk to file nomination papers. Candidate Statements are confidential until the conclusion of the nomination period. Make appointment with the City Clerk to submit petition and other paperwork. It is all received at the same time.
Q If I have turned in my Nomination Paper and I want to obtain additional signatures can I get it back?
A Once a Nomination Paper is filed with the Elections Official (City Clerk), the Nomination Paper may not be returned to the candidate to obtain additional signatures. Elections Code 10221
Q What are the dates for the Nomination Filing Period?
A Not before 113 days prior to the Election and not later than 88 days prior to the Election. Contact the City Clerk’s Office for dates and deadlines. (e.g. July 13 through August 7, 2026)
