National City Secures $74,000 Regional Grant to Upgrade Emergency Operations Center

The National City Fire Department is pleased to announce it has received a $74,000 grant from the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation to enhance emergency communications and operational readiness at the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The grant represents 90 percent of the total projected cost of $82,222 and will fund critical infrastructure improvements at the EOC facility. The EOC serves as a central coordination hub during emergencies, where key staff members gather to manage response efforts. The EOC is responsible for multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional coordination, policy implementation, information management, and resource coordination to support Incident Commanders in the field.

“The ability to maintain communications during a major disaster is absolutely critical to protecting lives and coordinating response efforts,” said Walter Amedee, National City Fire Department Emergency Manager. “This investment strengthens our Emergency Operations Center, improves communications redundancy, and enhances our ability to serve the community when it matters most. We are truly grateful to the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation for their partnership and commitment to public safety.”

The EOC, which operates under Fire Administration, ensures our law enforcement, fire-rescue, public works, and other emergency response agencies have the proper resources, facilities, and information necessary to perform their duties in times of crisis.

Grant funding will support the following upgrades:

• Renovation and wiring improvements to modernize the Emergency Operations Center

• Acquisition of eight portable radios to strengthen communications redundancy

• Purchase and installation of Starlink satellite communications equipment to provide an additional layer of connectivity during major disasters

These improvements will enhance the City’s ability to coordinate response operations during earthquakes, severe weather events, and other large-scale emergencies, particularly if traditional land based communications systems are disrupted.

The grant was made possible through the leadership and support of Joan Jones, Executive Director of the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation, and Frank Ault, Board Chair. Their commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness across the region continues to make a meaningful impact for local communities.

The City of National City appreciates the Foundation’s investment in public safety and looks forward to continuing this important partnership.
