Searching & Checking Out Books from Overdrive
From the Overdrive website, you can browse our selection of audio and text eBooks or conduct an advanced search for specific titles and formats. The first step, if you haven’t done so already, is to Sign In to the Overdrive website. Doing so will grant access to additional titles that are exclusive to National City Public Library card holders. To begin, click the Sign In link at the top right corner of the screen.
Select National City Public Library from the drop down menu list of libraries. On the next screen, type the full 14-digit library card number. You can have Overdrive remember your card number by clicking the check box for Remember my login information on this device. Signing in will take you back to the Overdrive homepage.
To search for titles, you may either browse subjects or type in a keyword search. To conduct an Advanced Search, click the Advanced Search link directly underneath the search box.
The Advance Search page allows you to search for books using different parameters. From here, you can search by title and author (first name, last name). You may also narrow your results by subject, literary award, language and format. For your convenience, clicking the Show only titles with copies available checkbox will eliminate titles that are currently checked out.
Click Search and you’ll be taken to the results page. You can immediately determine if a title is available by examining the book or headphone icon found on each book cover. If the icon is a solid black, the title is available to check out. If the icons are gray, the book has been checked out and can be placed on hold.
Click on a book cover. If it is available, click the Borrow button. NOTE: Be sure to determine whether or not the book comes in a format that is compatible with your device. Borrowing a book will take you to your Bookshelf where you can choose the appropriate format of the title before downloading it. If you decide that you don’t want the title, click the Return Title link.
By visiting the Account page, you can manage your settings, view holds, manage your wish list and download your titles. Click on the Account link at the top of the page. You’ll be asked to sign in if you haven’t already.
There are four different sections within the Account page:
Bookshelf – Displays the titles that are currently checked out on your account
Holds – Lists all titles you have on hold.
Lists – Manage titles that you have placed in a Wish List. Any titles that have been rated can also be viewed along with a collection of titles recommended to you by Overdrive.
Settings – Specify the loan duration of eBooks and audio books. You can choose between 7 and 14 days.
